Description

Table/Wall-mounted telephone set W49 from the original German Federal Post Office inventory.

Special Feature: the W 49 can be used both as a desktop set and as a wall-mounted set.

The fork and the number switch housing are turned through 180° to convert it from a desktop to a wall-mounted set. As a wall-mounted unit, the W49 is attached to the wall with its sturdy metal base plate.

When the W49 is screwed together as a desktop set, it hardly differs from the W48 at first glance. The handset, the fork, the number switch and the electromechanical inner workings are identical except for the slightly different design of the fork switch.

Like the W48, the W49 was made of black or ivory-colored Bakelite.

Lovingly restored original devices.

As the German Federal Post Office was skeptical about the design of the W 49, only a few production orders were placed with Hagenuk. As it was made of the very hard but brittle and fragile thermosetting plastic Bakelite, many units were quickly broken or badly damaged due to careless handling. The W 49 was a telephone that was more likely to be used in workshops or industrial premises, i.e. it was often used in dirty, dusty environments. For all these reasons, this telephone is less common today than other models of the time.

The desk/wall-mounted telephone W 49, designated “Ti-Wa W 49”, is an analog telephone that was developed and manufactured from 1949 by the Hanseatische Apparatebau-Gesellschaft Neufeldt & Kuhnke (Hagenuk) in Kiel for Deutsche Post in the western occupation zones and from 1950 for Deutsche Bundespost.

The W 49 was built exclusively by Hagenuk. In 1967, the W 49 was replaced by the newly developed “FeWAp 61” wall-mounted telephone set. Like all telephones of the time, the W 49 used the pulse dialing method for automatic telephone switching
Remark:

An IWV-MFV/converter (120065) or a digital IWV-MFV converter (120069) is required to connect analog pulse dialing telephones to VoIP routers/telephone systems/fixed networks. For use in other European countries, please also order the specific country plug.

The RJ11-plug is designed for international use.
